Ronde-Bosse

Enamel en ronde bosse is a technique where the enamel is applied to rounded or tridimensional shapes in high relief. This difficult technique was mainly used for small golden sculptures and ornaments during the gothic and renaissance periods. The main problem with ronde-bosse is the necessity to preserve the naked metal from damage during the firing. For this reason, calcium sulphate is used to cover the areas of the object which don’t have to be enameled. The Salt Cellar of Italian artist Benvenuto Cellini is one of the most famous examples of "ronde-bosse"
